In December of 1998, I purchased my first home, and rental property, as the property was a duplex. This became my first introduction to the world of real estate as an investor. Over the next year, I bought numerous other investment properties and began seeing better returns on my passive income than in my full time job. By the end January of 2001, I had just finished up my real estate classes and became a licensed Realtor. It was a decision that was made just in time because within a day of my licensure I was laid off of employment from the engineering firm where I worked due to a major slowdown. I had prayed to know how much I should get involved in real estate and based on results, that prayer was answered.

I immediately went to work on finding a brokerage to affiliate my license.  I made the mistake many agents make, thinking that large nationally known brokerages are better.  I erroneously and initially believed that a "name brand" would get me more business somehow.  I sure worked hard that first year and had a phenomenal number of sales.  As Thomas Jefferson said, "The harder I work, the luckier I am!"  When I received my 1099, I was sickened by the amount of my money, totalling over $50,000 had gone to my brokerage!  The illusion of getting my business from the brokerage was also shattered as not one of my deals or leads had come from my brokerage.  I was rarely even able to ask my broker a question, as I could never find him, let alone get an actual lead.  I came to the stark realization that I was the business and that I would have business and clients wherever I went as I was my own and best lead generator.

After the first year, I immediately set out in search of a 100% concept brokerage.  I found one and made the change in order to keep more of my money.  My new "split" agreement committed me to pay a very large monthly fee in addition to a sizable transaction fee in order to keep "100%" of my money.  Though I was keeping more than the split I gave up in the first traditional brokerage, I was still giving up a lot.  If it hadn't been for the discovery of unscrupulous and criminal behavior on the part of the broker, I may never have left.  This discovery led me to look for another brokerage overnight as I felt I could not remain at a brokerage where I would be forced to support a broker without virtue and principles.  I literally could not find another brokerage that featured all the broker support, niche training, marketing materials, commitment to virtue, and appeal I wanted, and at a low transaction fee.  I saw that the only way I would have everything I was looking for was to create it myself.  North Star Realty became the fulfillment of everything I wished to find in a brokerage and couldn't.  In the words of Ghandi, I, and North Star Realty, became the change I wished to see.

Since June of 2002, North Star Realty has been the answer to my real estate needs and an ever-growing number of new and experienced real estate agents.  North Star Realty still retains many of its first agents hired in 2002.  Many of the innovations and improvements over the years and on an ongoing basis have come based on the needs of our agents.  Our success has been in supporting the success of each of our agents through marketing tools, broker support, training, organization, individual attention, and a commitment to virtue and community service. 

My personality lends itself best to the work of a Principal Broker in defending my agents in any dispute or problem they encounter, creating better systems and tools, providing a system of order and organization, inspiring a feeling of unity and comeraderie, and enjoying the hard work of day to day business.  The personality traits of loyalty, organization, innovation, unity, efficiency, leadership, and self motivation have also served me well in my personal organization, my family, as I am married and am the father of nine children.
